Wednesday was to start as it was to finish: in the company of Slavs. My taxi to the station was driven by a Bulgarian and this first stage of my journey went as smoothly as the rest: train to Kings Cross, underground to Paddington, Heathrow Express and a Transaero flight to Moscow. (more…)

The train ticketing systems in the UK defy logic but fortunately if you can find your way around them there are some super deals to be made. Last Friday I needed to begin my day in Catalonia and to end in Sheffield. I didn’t really want to be driving north late at night so the only solution seemed to be EasyJet to Gatwick and then the train via St Pancras. (more…)

Tamworth isn’t an obvious leisure destination. I first remembered it as a town on the A5 which I used to drive along half a dozen times a year to and from University. But those days are long gone and now there’s the M6 so many people wouldn’t know where Tamworth is these days. (more…)

I’m tempted to describe Bridgnorth as a poor man’s Ludlow but that would be wrong and no doubt bring down the wrath of many. Like Ludlow it’s a Shropshire market town and both have town centres which date back centuries. However whereas Ludlow enjoys its gourmet epithet Bridgnorth owes more to the Black Country and Thomas Telford. (more…)
