Have you noticed that when you find a restaurant with a super value set menu you generally end up spending twice as much as you expected when you went in ? So it was with me today when I was attracted by the £9.95 on offer at Edwinns in Cambridge. By the time I’d added a glass of wine (it was Saturday) and an espresso my bill added up to £17.27! (more…)
County Surveyors’ dinner: 15 Jan 09 January 17, 2009

Talk of surveyors and I generally think of theodolites, hi-viz jackets and hard hats. but the County Surveyors are something else. They’re the people who work in the local council and look after the roads and they’ve got a society which has an annual dinner at the RAC Club in Pall Mall no less. And this year I was invited. One of the things that happens when you become a county councillor is that you are immediately invited to give up more of your spare time to engage in more civic duty. And so it was that a couple of years ago I was invited to be a ‘local authority governor’ at Impington Village College. I was flattered, I said yes. It’s Sunday lunchtime. There’s nothing in the fridge and you decide to head off and find a pub for lunch. As long as it’s not Mothers’ Day you’ve got a chance or have you? But you head off hopefully without any specific plan just looking for the perfect pub. (more…)
