I am a creature of routine and on Saturday mornings this means Cambridge and breakfast at Don Pasquale. There’s usually something interesting going on, I generally bump into friends and I do my best to avoid spending money. This week has been pretty typical. (more…)

The symmetry was elegant … 32 deg C in Bali and 32 deg F in the UK. When we landed this morning after a 13 hour flight from Hong Kong (pardon my air miles; I have not ‘offset’ them because that’s akin to joining the RSCPA and continuing to kick the cat; I just try to be abstemious in other ways) it was cold and after the incident in Bali there were no other problems. We even got in early and were home courtesy of National Express by 8am. (more…)

Meticulous planning and flawless execution but it was still daylight robbery! We arrived in Bali at about 4pm and were picked up by the hotel mini-bus. About 10 minutes into our journey there was a noise from the real near side of the vehicle which I dismissed as some vegetation caught up in the wheel. Shortly thereafter a passing driver told us we had a flat. We pulled over into a side street to change the tyre. (more…)

We arrived in Jakarta on Thursday after 24 hours of traveling courtesy of Stagecoach and Cathay Pacific. I lived in the city for 2 years in the 70s and last visited in 1982. My how it’s changed. There are high rise hotels, apartment blocks and offices all over, there are the inevitable shopping malls and there’s a wide choice of restaurants as would befit a city which has been through a period of economic boom. We chose the Front Page for dinner on Saturday night. We were not disappointed. (more…)
