I’ve been an avid photographer for over 40 years and have grown up with a pretty good knowledge of the physics of analogue photography. I moved to digital about 2 years ago but worry that I don’t take full advantage of the technology. That’s why I’ve signed myself up for a week’s course at Cottenham Village College summer school. I’m pretty fortunate in that during my working life various employers have paid for me to travel and to stay in some rather fine hotels all over the place. Often they’ve been the big brands and what they’ve lacked in terms of character they’ve generally made up for in efficiency which is generally what you look for when on a business trip. This week I stayed in quite the most elegant hotel that I have experienced. The Hotel Món St Benet in Sant Fruitós de Bages in Catalonia. (more…)

I often refer to the advantages of living in a village, Histon having a village green and its own parish council which seem to be two necessary if not sufficient criteria. However given that Histon and its twin village Impington have 3000 houses, north of the A14, between them it doesn’t match most people’s concept what’s really a village. However there are hundreds of such villages in Cambridgeshire and not all of them have been blighted by major roads running through them, ill-conceived housing developments or lost pubs and other key amenities. The Cambridge Marketing College is perhaps the leading marketing college in the UK and provides a comprehensive range of course for Chartered Institute of Marketing qualifications. Over the last few years I have lectured a number of such courses at the Certificate, Diploma and post graduate Diploma levels. And as a lecturer I get invited to the annual dinner at which the ‘Annual Cambridge Marketing Lecture’ is delivered. This year the lecture took place at St Johns’ and was delivered by Paul Fifield, Visiting Professor in Marketing Strategy at the Southampton University School of Management. (more…)

Last Saturday night was an occasion for lots of people who knew each other 40 years ago to see whether or not they could still recognise each other. With less hair and a little more around the waist it was not so easy but surprisingly voices seemed easier. (more…)

You can spend half your life in Cambridge attending networking meetings. I avoid that excess but one such meeting I do attend is the Business Creation Forum (BCF) which meets bimonthly over breakfast at the Cambridge Lodge. (more…)
